Associate Director; Governmental Training, Education, and Development Division
The Vinson Institute invites applications and nominations for a public service faculty position as Associate Director of its Governmental Training, Education, and Development Division (GTED). As a member of the Vinson Institute's management team, the position reports to the Director of the Institute. GTED is responsible for the governmental training and education programs of the Vinson Institute, which annually offers some 500 instructional programs involving more than 20,000 local and state government elected and appointed officials. The position will be available June 1, 2009. A Master's degree in Public Administration or related field is required; a similar terminal degree is preferred. The position carries rank in the public service faculty career ladder at The University of Georgia.

Environmental Policy Program Director
The Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Institute's Environmental Policy Program. The Institute serves state and local governments in Georgia, nationally and internationally with a broad range of research, training, and support programs. This position provides leadership to the Environmental Policy Program which is part of the Governmental Services and Research Division of the Institute. This position will carry rank in the public service faculty career ladder of the University.

Qualifications: Masters level required, preference will be given to broadly trained candidates who hold a Ph.D. in environmental policy, environmental science, energy, water resources, growth management or public administration. Practical experience in policy making and/or working with policy makers to address a range of environmental issues and problems is desired. A Juris Doctorate with this relevant experience will also be considered. The successful candidate should have experience in working on policy issues with state policy-makers and local government officials and an appreciation for the complexities involved in working in a public setting. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing are essential. As the Director will spend considerable time working directly with state and local officials, both elected, appointed, and staff, it is critical that they have the desire, ability and experience to interact in a very positive and supportive manner with these important customers of the Institute. Letters of recommendation and information provided in the submission of the application for the position should show evidence of such experience.
This position works closely with the Governor's office, the General Assembly and state agencies, and local governments on issues concerning management and protection of natural resources and the environment. The successful candidate will contribute to the Institute's service and research goals through technical assistance and applied policy research for the state legislature, state agencies and local governments; preparation of reports and publications that address practitioner/policymaker needs; consultation with federal, state and local agencies and non-governmental organizations; participation in environmental management training programs for government officials; and seeking external support of these activities through grants and contracts.
The position requires supervision of faculty and professional staff and coordination of technical assistance and applied research in areas such as water policy and management, atmospheric and energy policy, land use and growth management, solid and hazardous waste management, and protection of ecosystems services.

This program is within the Governmental Services and Research Division. The position will be available January 5, 2009, but will not be filled until and/or unless a qualified person is identified. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Masters degree or equivalent in Demography, Sociology, Geography, Economics, or City/Urban Planning is required. The successful candidate must possess strong knowledge and experience in demographic analysis, regional economics and statistical forecasting skills. This position will report directly to the Program Director and will spend considerable time working directly with state and local officials, both elected, appointed, and staff. Thus, it is critical that the candidate possess the desire, ability and experience to interact in a very positive and supportive manner with these important customers of the Institute. Selected candidate will be expected to work as part of a team on public management and policy issues with special emphasis in the area of Demography.
